So. Slow."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Today, our 4-year-old thanked me for making him walk home from kindergarten: \u201cWhen we drive home, we\u2019re so <em>fast<\/em>. <em>I don\u2019t want to be fast.<\/em>\u201d He\u2019s also always the last person to finish when the family eats together \u2013 just as I was, and my father before me. I guess being slow runs in our family.<\/p>\n<p><strong>I eat slowly.<\/strong> When time is short, I prefer not eating at all to having to hurry. I move slowly: Walking is way better than driving, or even riding a bike. If I cannot fully enjoy the moment, I\u2019d rather skip it.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s why Derek Sivers\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/sivers.org\/slow\">\u201cI\u2019m a very slow thinker\u201d<\/a> resonated so deeply with me. He writes: \u201cI\u2019m a disappointing person to try to debate or attack. I just have nothing to say in the moment, except maybe, &#8218;Good point.&#8216; Then a few days later, after thinking about it a lot, I have a response.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>I\u2019m a slow thinker<\/strong> myself: I\u2019m quick with questions and ideas, but slow to answer, decide, or judge. (What do you call the opposite of \u201cjumping to a conclusion\u201d?) Being fully aware of the breadth of possible explanations \u2013 and of everyone\u2019s point of view (the burden of being empathic) \u2013 I know I need time to think things through.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, sometimes I\u2019m simply slow because I\u2019m <strong>daydreaming<\/strong>, with my head in the clouds. (Understandably, my wife often hates all that slowness.)<\/p>\n<p>The above probably makes sense to you, but I guess it sounds weird if I say <strong>I\u2019m even slow to feel<\/strong>, to build up emotion. Of course I don\u2019t feel nothing: I immediately sense excitement or unease.
